'Short Is The New Long' is a new podcast hosted by independent authors Greg Krojac and Adam Stump, geared towards the writers and readers of short reads – a term which takes micro-fiction, short stories, novellas, and short novels (up to around 60,000 words) under its wing.

The podcast came about when Greg realised – having written ten short novels (within the range of 40,000 to approximately 60,000 words), two novellas, and a short story – that all his stories came under the short read category.

He typed short stories into the search box of his podcast application and was rewarded with a plethora of results, all of them offering readings of short stories, fourteen of them unimaginatively titled ‘short stories’. None dealt with the writing process of short reads or commented on the renaissance of short read writing. If you’re looking for short stories to listen to, just do the same search and you won’t be disappointed.

But that wasn’t what Greg wanted to do. He wanted to create a podcast that would actually address the writing and reading of short reads, believing that the category merited its own attention instead of being bundled in with its big brother, the full length novel, almost as an afterthought. He felt he’d stumbled upon a niche which could be filled with a new podcast.

He also knew that he didn’t want to create the podcast on his own and needed a co-host/co-creator, someone who was as passionate about short reads as he was. He didn’t need to make up a shortlist of people to contact – he knew exactly who would be the best partner for this endeavour, a fellow independent author, Adam Stump, who writes short stories spanning multiple genres including science fiction, horror/suspense, crime, game lit, and humour. Greg crossed his fingers and messaged Adam, asking if he’d like to join him in this venture. Adam loved the idea and jumped at the chance.

Conversations followed to discuss who would do what, along with a lot of research as to the content of the podcast. As well as their being good friends, it soon became apparent that Adam and Greg’s particular skillsets complemented each other perfectly. The ‘Dream Team’ had been formed.

Now the podcast needed a title. A couple of articles on the internet about short reads used the phrase ‘short is the new long’ to describe the increasing popularity of short stories and novels. Playing on the original idiom from the world of fashion, ‘…is the new black’, there was really only one title that perfectly suited the podcast.

So, the podcast now had a title, ‘Short Is The New Long’, but it needed meat on its bones and some structure. The aim of the podcast was clear – to bring together people who read short reads and those who write them – but Greg and Adam wanted the podcast to stand out from the crowd. To that end, ‘Short Is The New Long’ is a mix of conversations about reading and writing short reads, authors reading excerpts from their own work, and author interviews, all stemming from a common interest in short reads.

You'll be able to listen to ‘Short Is The New Long' and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts and many more podcast platforms. The first episode will be released on Tuesday 8th September.
